I never reread books. It’s a policy I have. There’s simply not enough time. How can I justify spending time on something I’ve already read when there are books I haven’t read waiting for me? I never reread books. Not ever. If I’ve read a book once I really don’t revisit it, especially because my list of books I want to read and haven’t is constantly growing. There is simply no way to keep up. Each book is so unique that I want to read as many as I can so that I can explore as many lives and places as I possibly can. Rereading a book would prevent me from being able to learn and experience as much as I want to, and I just can’t let that happen. Like all good rules, I have one exception. I read The Great Gatsby every year. No matter what. One thing that makes this possible is my deep love for this novel. Reading Jay Gatsby’s story every year is something I love to do. Nick Carroway’s narration, Fitzgerald’s prose, is beautiful and captivating. The novel is not long, and I cannot help but get drawn into the story every time I read it. I just love this novel—I can’t help it. So I reread. This one time. This one exception to an otherwise perfect rule. Will there be more exceptions eventually? I’m sure there will. But for now I remain steadfast in my love of always reading a new book!
