In trying to decide which book to read first in 2018 I was untroubled because I had been looking forward to Uncommon Type by Tom Hanks since it arrived in my Book of the Month box several months ago. I am usually hesitant when considering books written by celebrities, especially ones that are not memoirs, but this one gave me confidence that it would be an amazing read. Hanks’ collection of short stories was nothing less than a pleasure to read. In fact, I found myself pleasantly surprised by the ending of some of his short stories; where I would expect disaster, Hanks would provide perfect plot that brought a smile to my face.
I also enjoyed that Hanks included one recurring group of characters who had a vast range of adventures from traveling to space to bowling for ESPN. His creativity did not cease there, though, because Hanks further demonstrates his imagination by projecting many of his stories into an unfamiliar future. I would recommend Uncommon Type to anyone who enjoys a little bit of the whimsical, experimental, and joyful in his or her reading experience. Here’s to finding a good book!
