An eccentric protagonist with anxiety, a rich almost boyfriend whose father is missing, and a best friend who writes Star Wars fan fiction—what more could you want from a novel? John Green’s latest novel, Turtles All the Way Down, gained a ton of hype before it was even released. It was advertised as more of a mystery than his other novels had been, and this was certainly true, though I would say this novel is about much more than solving a mystery. This novel is about realizing who you are and where you fit in the world, quirks and all. This novel is about friendship, dealing with grief, and surviving all of this to become a better version of yourself, and John Green does all this with his main character Aza who suffers from an incredible anxiety and fear of contracting C Diff. The story of her life unfolds as she and her best friend Daisy set out to solve a missing persons case. My favorite part about this novel was the way in which Green selves into Aza’s mind and thoughts during her episodes of anxiety. I found his portrayal particularly apt and helpful to those who do not suffer with anxiety. There was honestly nothing I did not like about this book. The language in it was not distracting in the least, and his plot was engaging and enjoyable. After reading a couple of John Green books for my classroom library this year, I think this is my favorite one of them all. I highly recommend you go pick up a copy! Here’s to finding a good book!
